It is inevitable that the stockinette will curl. I will explain why this happens from a structural standpoint.

The stockinette curls in two directions. Vertically it curls toward the front and horizontally it curls toward the back.

The reason it curls toward the front side is because of a series of structures that pull loops out from within loops.

In Garter Stitch, Rib Stitch, and Moss Stitch, knit stitches and purl stitches alternate in a row, and the rounding forces cancel each other out.
